Overview

About Families Care Inc

Families Care supports families and young people in Grand Island and across Central and Northern Nebraska who are navigating behavioral or mental health challenges. The work is grounded in peer support, so families are hearing from staff with lived experience, not just paperwork and process. For donors, that means helping people get advocacy, education, resources, and a real person who can help them find their footing in child-serving systems.

What sets Families Care apart is how closely it ties lived experience to direct support. Its staff help families move through mental health, school IEP, child welfare, juvenile justice, and substance use systems with peer support, advocacy, and education that is rooted in real understanding.

Stories

The people behind the work.

Peer support as a lifeline for a parent in crisis

A parent participant described one-on-one peer support as a compassionate space during a son's mental health journey, saying it reduced isolation, offered guidance, and helped strengthen the parent’s own wellbeing.

Peer Support was a lifeline for me during some of the most difficult moments of my son's mental health journey. I often felt isolated and overwhelmed during that time, so engaging in one-on-one peer support provided a non-judgmental, compassionate space where I felt truly understood.
