About Save Giraffes Now
A giraffe rescued from a snare, fence, or dangerous stretch of road may need more than a quick intervention. Save Giraffes Now supports the full path back to the wild, from emergency veterinary care and rescue centers to relocation, anti-poaching teams, water access, and community-led conservation. Founded in Dallas in 2019, the organization works across 10 African countries to protect all four giraffe species while supporting the people, livestock, and wildlife that share their habitats.
Save Giraffes Now focuses exclusively on giraffe conservation, working across 10 African countries and all four giraffe species. Its support reaches from direct rescue and relocation to genetic diversity, veterinary care, ranger teams, research, water access, and practical ways for communities and wildlife to live alongside one another.
Programs

Giraffe rescue and rewilding
Establishes and supports giraffe rescue centers and orphanages that care for young or injured giraffes until they can safely return to the wild.
Giraffe translocation and genetic diversity
Rescues and relocates giraffes from emergency situations, expands their range, and moves giraffes between reserves to improve genetic diversity and breeding groups.
Anti-poaching ranger and community scout support
Establishes, manages, equips, and trains anti-poaching ranger and community scout teams across key giraffe landscapes.
Water source development
Creates and improves water sources for people, wildlife, and livestock through boreholes, solar pumps, water tanks, dam improvements, river access points, and invasive plant removal.
Human-wildlife coexistence
Works with communities and government officials on wildlife crossings, infrastructure impacts, habitat connectivity, conservation education, fencing practices, and prosecutorial support for wildlife crime.
Emergency giraffe medical care
Provides veterinary interventions, medical advice, treatment protocols, and care for injured, orphaned, or trapped giraffes.
Wildlife highway crossing research
Studies how drought, vegetation, water sources, and roads affect giraffe movements to guide interventions such as speed limits, underpasses, and water-point management.
About this work
Mission
Our mission is to save giraffes from extinction so they can live freely and safely in the woodlands and savannas of their native Africa.
Who they serve
Wild giraffes across Africa, including reticulated, Masai, northern, and southern giraffes, as well as the communities, people, livestock, and other wildlife that share their habitats.
Their impact
- In 2021, Save Giraffes Now moved six giraffes to Khama Rhino Sanctuary in Botswana to improve genetic diversity and sex ratios.
- In 2024, Save Giraffes Now moved five giraffes to Mokolodi Nature Reserve in Botswana to improve the gene pool and reproductive success.
- From October 2024 to March 2025, 59 giraffes in one Ugandan park were rescued and treated using a new snare-wound protocol supplied by Save Giraffes Now.
- Save Giraffes Now and the Milgis Trust established, equipped, and trained a mobile community scout team in 2021. The local giraffe population increased from approximately 40 giraffes in 2021 to around 65 in 2024.
- In 2025, Save Giraffes Now supported the emergency rescue of 26 Masai giraffes in Naivasha, Kenya, and relocated them to protected wildlife reserves and Nairobi National Park.
- In 2025, Save Giraffes Now rescued 16 Masai giraffes trapped inside fences on private lands in Kajiado County, Kenya, and released them to join a larger population.
- In 2025, Save Giraffes Now rescued and relocated 20 southern giraffes from a residential area in South Africa to reserves on the western border of Kruger National Park.
- In September 2025, Save Giraffes Now and Goo Moremi reintroduced six southern giraffes to a protected community-based reserve in Botswana.
- Save Giraffes Now supported the rescue and relocation of a herd of giraffes in South Africa in 2022. A male giraffe from the herd later fathered a new calf in its new reserve.
