Overview

About Breakthrough Houston

Breakthrough Houston starts before 7th grade and stays with students through college completion, which is rare and reassuring in equal measure. Along the way, students get academic enrichment, college advising, and one-on-one support that helps the next step feel less like a guess. The organization also grows future educators and advocates through its Teaching Fellows, so the work keeps circling back into classrooms.

What sets Breakthrough Houston apart is the length of the relationship. Students are supported across middle school, high school, and college, while high school and college students gain classroom experience as Teaching Fellows and near-peer mentors.

Origin

Our story

Breakthrough Houston opened in 1995 with a small class of 7th grade students and a handful of teachers. It began as Summerbridge and later joined the national Breakthrough Collaborative, carrying forward a students-teaching-students model and a long-term commitment to serving students from middle school through high school graduation. The organization later expanded to a second Houston site in 2016 with Connect Community and a third site in 2019 at Gregory Lincoln Education Center.

Impact in person

Stories

The people behind the work.

From sixth grade student to teaching fellow

Elena joined Breakthrough in sixth grade hoping to grow academically. She says she found a community that believed in her, challenged her, and helped shape her as she moved into her own classroom as a teaching fellow and aspiring bilingual teacher.

“My relationship with Breakthrough began in sixth grade, when I joined as a student hoping to grow academically. But what I found was so much more: a community that believed in me, challenged me, and helped shape the person I am today. Now, standing in front of my own classroom as a teaching fellow is a full-circle moment. Thank you, Breakthrough, for being my second home, my foundation, and my motivation to become a bilingual teacher who uplifts the next generation.”

College guidance that follows students through college

Diodivine says Breakthrough has supported her since middle school and continues to help as she works toward becoming a dermatologist. She points to guidance, test prep, financial aid support, and emergency assistance that helped her enter college confident and prepared.

“Breakthrough Houston has been with me since middle school—and they’re still by my side as I work toward becoming a dermatologist. Their guidance, test prep, financial aid support, and even emergency assistance helped me enter college confident and prepared. As a first-gen student and child of immigrants, I’m building the future I once only imagined.”

A college process made more navigable

Mareli describes workshops, college visits, test prep, and program managers that helped her understand college fit, find her voice, and prepare for the next step after high school.

“Without Breakthrough Houston, I would’ve been lost in the college process. Their workshops, college visits, test prep, and incredible program managers helped me understand college fit, find my voice, and believe in my future. I’m excited for what’s ahead—and grateful for the support that got me here.”
