Overview

About Houston Community Services

Houston Community Services gives Houston’s Hispanic community a place to get real-life help without losing the cultural context that matters. At Centro Aztlan, that looks like immigration services, income tax preparation, notary public services, consultations, and the Azteca Scholarship for Houston-area students. If you care about support that is both useful today and rooted in the East End community, this is an organization with a clear lane.

What sets Houston Community Services apart is how directly it meets everyday needs while staying anchored in the East End Hispanic community. The Azteca Scholarship adds a long-running investment in Houston-area high school seniors, which gives the organization a reach that goes beyond a single visit or filing season.

Origin

Our story

Houston Community Services began in 1974, when 12 University of Houston students talked about the problems facing Houston’s Hispanic community, most of whom lived in the East End. They decided the community needed a place that could inform and educate people, so they set out to build a community center that would serve as a clearinghouse for help and information. The organization was incorporated in 1975 with a focus on social services, cultural enrichment, and economic development.
