Overview

About Engera Inc

Engera is worth knowing because its work shows up where daily care actually happens, in seven health facilities, in community health sessions, and in practical projects like wells, school meals, and staff training. In 2024 alone, those facilities saw 164,209 patients, supported 2,067 safe deliveries, and reached 73,782 people with health education. For donors, the appeal is straightforward, support that helps local health care function for women, children, schoolchildren, pregnant women, and rural families.

Engera stands out for staying close to local health facilities and local staff. It supports care with the unglamorous but essential pieces that keep services going, medicines, equipment, operating costs, clean water, solar power, and trained people on the ground.

Origin

Our story

Engera began with a trip to Ethiopia in 2005, when Francesco Silenzi went to accompany friends adopting a seriously ill child and saw a country where his work as a pediatrician could matter. He and other volunteers returned to provide medical care, first in orphanages and later in rural areas after meeting the Bishop of Emdibir and Sister Surabhila. Engera was created to support local health work, starting with Zizencho, then expanding to other health centers in Gurage and a clinic in South West Shewa. Its name comes from the Ethiopian word for injera, a nod to care that belongs in everyday life.

Impact in person

Stories

The people behind the work.

Galeya Rogdha school meals

Children at Galeya Rogdha School used to walk more than an hour to class and often had only a biscuit and water. Since February 2024, Engera has provided daily nutritious meals and regular health check-ups for 250 children, and the project also supports local food purchases and school-based care.

Solar power at Galeya Rogdha Clinic

Galeya Rogdha Clinic operated without reliable electricity for more than a decade. In November 2024, Engera helped inaugurate a solar power system so the clinic can provide care around the clock for the surrounding community.

Now, no mother will suffer in the dark. Mothers will give birth in bright, well-lit rooms, ready to hold and care for their newborns.

Dawit’s scholarship path

Dawit worked in the fields for a daily wage before Engera supported him to earn a diploma from Hossana Health Science College. He now works as a lab technician and has received a scholarship to pursue a degree at the same college.
