About Housing And Neighborhood Development Service Inc
Housing And Neighborhood Development Service Inc., based in Bear, DE, works on a problem you can see: vacant properties that could be homes. The organization acquires those properties, renovates or remodels them, and uses them to house people facing homelessness, domestic violence, shelter living, or HIV and AIDS. It also supports youth, elderly, and family housing efforts in New York City and Northern Delaware. For donors, the appeal is simple, real, and tangible, this is housing work that starts with a building and ends with someone having a place to live.
H.A.N.D.S. is rooted in property restoration, which means its impact begins with a vacant building and moves toward housing for people who need it. Alongside that, it supports family housing, elderly care resources, youth recreational opportunities, and the Teaching Garden Go Vertical Project, so the work reaches beyond shelter alone.

Our story
Founded in 1999, H.A.N.D.S. began as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit serving underprivileged populations in New York City and Northern Delaware. From 1999 to 2008, it worked with HUD and real estate agencies to acquire vacant properties, renovate or remodel them, and sell the improved homes to people who may not have had that chance otherwise.
