About Pet Haven Inc

Pet Haven Inc gives cats in Canyon County and the Treasure Valley a place to land, whether they need a home, a spay or neuter appointment, vaccinations, a microchip, or a foster spot while they wait. Since 1972, it has helped cats move from uncertainty to a safer next step, and over the last five years it has adopted out more than 2,000 cats to good homes. For donors, that means support goes straight into practical care for cats and kittens, not just placement, but the everyday work that helps them stay healthy along the way.

Pet Haven is a limited-admission, no-kill cat shelter with on-site low-cost services, so cats can be adopted, treated, and supported in one place in Nampa. It also handles surrender intake, foster care, and off-site adoptions, which makes it a useful stop for both cats who need homes and people who need real help figuring out what comes next.

Origin

Our story

Pet Haven started with Helen G. Wilson, whose care for animals began early, from running a dog hotel behind her house as a child to taking in a stray cat while teaching at Northwest Nazarene College in Nampa. In 1972, at age 58, she organized the first humane society in Canyon County. The organization first housed dogs and boarded stray cats at willing veterinary clinics, then bought its own building in 1996 and changed its name to Pet Haven Inc. in 2021.

For the community

Need help?

How someone in need can access Pet Haven Inc’s services.

People who want to adopt can visit the shelter in person, and viewing adoptable cats does not require an appointment. People needing to surrender or rehome a cat must complete a surrender application and attend an intake assessment by appointment, after which the cat is placed on a waiting list until space becomes available.

Stories

The people behind the work.

Rachel the stray calico and her six kittens

A local helper found a pregnant calico named Rachel, arranged a foster placement through Pet Haven, and brought her to the shelter for evaluation. Rachel later gave birth to six kittens, and the story follows the foster care and shelter support that helped keep the family safe until the kittens were ready for the next stage of care.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about this nonprofit and how its work happens.

How do I surrender a cat to Pet Haven?

Start with a surrender application, then come in for an intake assessment by appointment. A staff member will contact you within two business days, and the cat will stay on a waiting list until there is room.

Can Pet Haven take kittens right away?

No. Kittens younger than 6 weeks old cannot be accepted, and younger kittens may need foster resources if those are available.

What does The Friendly Fixers spay and neuter clinic offer?

The on-site clinic offers low-cost spay and neuter procedures by appointment. It also has add-on services like nail trims and certain vaccines, and feral cats need to be brought in a trap.

Do I need an appointment to view adoptable cats?

No. You can visit the shelter to see adoptable cats without an appointment. The adoption process itself takes time, and it stops later in the day during open hours.

Can I place a hold on a cat?

Yes. A 24-hour hold can be placed in person at the shelter.
